How We Measure Activewear for Consistent Fit
The measurement process begins by translating the approved design into clearly defined points of measurement. For tops, these may include chest width, body length, shoulder width, sleeve length, armhole depth and bottom opening. Activewear bottoms may require relaxed and extended waistband measurements, hip width, front and back rise, thigh, inseam, outseam and leg opening. Product-specific points are added whenever the design includes compression zones, shaped panels, sports-bra support, thumbholes or specialized pockets.
Each point must state where the measuring tape begins, where it ends and whether the garment is measured flat, relaxed, stretched or along a shaped seam. This prevents different technicians from interpreting the specification differently. Measurement tolerances are also established according to the garment area and production method.

USA collections often use alpha sizes such as XS–2XL for adults and age-linked labels for kids. EU programs may use numeric adult sizes and height-based sizing for children, while Asian collections commonly use alpha sizes with a different label-to-measurement relationship. A garment marked “M” in one market may therefore correspond more closely to another market’s “S” or “L.”

Branding on activewear must tolerate stretch, perspiration, friction and repeated washing. A technique that performs well on a relaxed cotton T-shirt may not be suitable for a highly elastic legging or lightweight running top.
